The UC Berkeley Sutter Health Postdoctoral Fellowship Program with the School of Public Health brings together research mentors, trainees, and clinical and community members from diverse disciplines to form multidisciplinary teams with a shared commitment to health equity, innovation, and the implementation and dissemination of research. The Sutter Health Center for Health Systems Research (CHSR) is a research department embedded in a large healthcare system devoted to identifying, evaluating and implementing proven health solutions. The center also generates new knowledge and contributes to the science of health equity research, driving innovation in collaboration with clinicians and communities to improve health.

The postdoctoral fellowship provides early-stage investigators with unique opportunities to perform innovative research and strengthen skills in: understanding and addressing social determinants of health and health disparities; and contributing to operational and strategic changes. This postdoctoral scholar position especially focuses on using dissemination and implementation science methods to study and address health disparities and social inequities. The selected postdoctoral scholar candidate will receive joint mentorship from UC Berkeley and Sutter Health faculty with an opportunity to develop research skills with a multidisciplinary team of investigators. The training can be tailored to suit the individual’s requirements with opportunities for authorship on relevant manuscripts, collaborative grant writing experience, and independent grant submission. Support for conference travel and other training experiences is available. Note that appointees in this position are not eligible to receive additional outside fellowships when beginning this appointment. This position is a full time for a two year term. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at other institutions.

Salary: $70,000.00 – $85,000 (Yearly Salary)

Responsibilities: 
During the appointment period, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  1. Work on existing funded research projects at Sutter Health CHSR and UC Berkeley School of Public Health, and build a portfolio of scholarly products (e.g., publications and grants)
  2. Develop a candidate initiated project that builds on the existing Sutter Health community-based infrastructure and/or ongoing research projects
  3. Attain expertise in the competencies related to stakeholder-engaged research
  4. Develop a further understanding of social determinants of health (economic, social, behavioral, political, environmental)
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in applying implementation and dissemination science methods
  6. Work effectively in and with diverse communities
  7. Write papers and grants using and incorporating dissemination and implementation science principles

Evaluation Criteria: Applicants will be competitively evaluated based on: similar overall research goals and objectives of Sutter Health CHSR and related projects; scholarly potential to conduct high impact research; and commitment to a research career in a research intensive environment. We seek a diverse applicants who have a strong commitment to health equity research, focused motivation, and an academic record that demonstrates a high level of intellectual achievement and curiosity.

Basic Qualifications: Completion of Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree), or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications: Finalist must have completed doctoral training (PhD or other equivalent international degree) by appointment start date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or other equivalent international degree in one of a variety of fields, including but not limited to, behavioral and social sciences, biological and natural sciences, health and medical sciences, public policy, and public health.
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder-engaged research.
  • Demonstrated qualitative and/or quantitative research skills.
  • Demonstrated outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated record of conducting research with underserved populations and scholarly products based that research.
