The Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS), Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University invites applications for a faculty position (Assistant or Associate Professor) in Methods & Application in Medical Social Sciences on the team science (non-tenure eligible) track. The Department provides a scientific home for applied researchers who integrate biomedical and social science approaches to improvement of health and health care delivery across the lifespan (www.mss.northwestern.edu). MSS provides rich resources for conducting research, including a broad scientific portfolio with multiple, large scale datasets across the lifespan, biostatistical and health informatics cores, expertise in multi-level assessment methods and collaborative relationships across Northwestern’s biomedical and life sciences campuses. In particular, MSS and its Center for Patient-Centered Outcomes within the Institute for Public Health & Medicine has an extensive array of funded research. Much of this research is organized within an Outcomes/Measurement Science Hub focused on patient-centered outcomes research, including patient reported outcomes, psychometrics, quality of care, symptom management, and comparative effectiveness research. Other thematic hubs that serve as scientific umbrellas for interdisciplinary activity within the Department are Lifespan Positive Health Promotion, Health Equity, and Mechanisms of Health & Disease. We are seeking candidates whose research focuses on a range of methods that advance the field of medical social sciences. We employ innovative methods to improve health, using state-of-the-art quantitative techniques, particularly longitudinal methods and modeling. The ideal candidate will have expertise in methods and approaches that complement and expand research methodology within one or more of our MSS thematic scientific hubs: Outcomes and Measurement Science, Health Equity, Mechanisms of Health and Disease, and/or Lifespan Health Promotion. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in data harmonization, growth modeling, trajectory modeling and related techniques. The ideal candidate’s interests integrate activities across multiple MSS hubs and health conditions, complementing ongoing programmatic research. This includes partnering with investigators having research foci on lifespan clinical research, health promotion, developmentally-based tool development for special populations (e.g., intellectual/developmental disabilities), and/or the use of psychometric methods and technology to advance health literacy. For all positions, a collaborative orientation and skill at team science are desirable. Candidates should have a record of scholarly publication, and of leading or collaborating on extramurally-funded research. S/he will collaborate on multiple programmatic areas of research and will also be encouraged to use this as a springboard for developing new lines of research. Participation in Departmental teaching and training activities and University service are also expected and valued. Applications will be considered until positions are filled, but for fullest consideration applications should be received by June 1st, 2019. Salary will be commensurate with experience and credentials. Hiring is contingent upon eligibility to work in the United States. Additional information about the Department of Medical Social Sciences can be viewed at www.mss.northwestern.edu.
