The Department of Medical Social Sciences (MSS), Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University invites applications for a faculty position (Assistant to Associate Professor) in health measurement and application on the team science (non-tenure eligible) track. The Department provides a unique scientific home for applied researchers who integrate biomedical and social science approaches to improve of health and health care delivery across the lifespan (www.mss.northwestern.edu). MSS provides rich resources to support research, including a broad scientific portfolio with multiple, large scale datasets across the lifespan, biostatistical and health informatics cores, expertise in multi-level assessment methods and collaborative relationships across Northwestern’s biomedical and life sciences campuses. In particular, MSS and its Center for Patient-Centered Outcomes within the Institute for Public Health & Medicine has an extensive array of funded research organized within an Outcomes/Measurement Science Hub focused on patient-centered outcomes research including outcomes measurement via Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs), psychometrics, quality of care, symptom management, and comparative effectiveness research. Other thematic hubs that serve as scientific umbrellas for interdisciplinary activity within the Department are Lifespan Positive Health Promotion, Health Equity, & Mechanisms of Health & Disease. We are seeking candidates whose research focuses on health applications of psychometric methods and/or who are interested in applying a range of psychometric techniques to health outcomes. The ideal candidates will have expertise in item response theory (IRT) and its application to item and test analysis, item banking procedures, applications such as computer adaptive testing or complex longitudinal modeling. A focus on health outcomes, quality of life and clinical applications of measurement science are of special interest. This person will be an integral part of the MSS Outcomes & Measurement Hub and its Psychometrics & Statistics Core, which emphasizes measurement and evaluation of PROs, the use of IRT and CAT for the assessment of quality of life and functioning, as well as a wide range of traditional analytic methods. We are especially interested in candidates whose interests integrate activities across multiple MSS hubs and health conditions and complement ongoing programmatic research. These include investigators with research foci on clinical research, healthcare delivery, developmental measurement science with special populations (e.g., intellectual/developmental disabilities), health disparities oriented measurement science (e.g., health literacy or cross-cultural validation), quantitative approaches to learning health systems and clinical decision tools, and/or symptom management. For all positions, a collaborative orientation and skill at team science are desirable. Candidates should have a record of scholarly publication, and of leading or collaborating on extramurally-funded research. S/he will collaborate on multiple funded studies of patient-centered outcomes and will also be encouraged to use this as a springboard for developing new lines of research. Individuals with experience managing large scale studies and data management teams are ideal as candidates may be considered to lead Departmental and extramurally funded cores. Participation in Departmental teaching and training activities and University service are also expected and valued. In particular, we are seeking individuals who would lead measurement/outcomes science curriculum within the MSS Social Science & Health track of NU’s Health Sciences Integrated Doctoral Program (HSIP).
