Position Overview / Statement of Need

The University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy has a long history of excellence in basic, clinical and applied sciences research across its departments of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacy Practice and Science. These efforts span the translational research continuum, focusing on health issues that impact patients at the local and national level.  The UK College of Pharmacy seeks to grow the research enterprise by strategically investing in the area of alcohol and substance use disorders (ASUDs).

Implementation science (IS) is the study of methods to promote the adoption and integration of evidence-based practices, interventions and policies into routine health care and public health settings.   We seek to establish an open rank position in IS to maintain, coordinate, and integrate IS research in the area of ASUD.  Specifically, we seek candidates with a focus on alcohol and substance abuse/addiction to support collaborative science that ultimately improves human health by preventing and treating alcohol and substance use disorders.

Proposed criteria for appointment, reappointment, promotion, tenure:

In addition to the University Administration Regulations for appointment, promotion and tenure (AR 2:1-2; AR 2:1-10) the criteria outlined in the “Rules of Shared Governance, Appendix D – Appointment and Promotion Evidences” of the UK College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science, shall be used in the appointment, reappointment, promotion and/or tenure determination process.

Assistant Professor

To qualify for appointment, reappointment or promotion to Assistant Professor, a candidate shall hold the terminal degree appropriate to the field of assignment and present evidence of capacities for good instruction, research or other creative activity, and service and a potential for significant growth in these areas.  The pertinent special criteria associated with the approval of a Special Title Series position shall serve as guidance for evaluators in matters related to appointment, reappointment, promotion, and the granting of tenure.

  1. Associate Professor

To qualify for appointment, reappointment or promotion to Associate Professor, a candidate must meet the qualifications of Assistant Professor and provide evidence of continuous improvement and contribution in instruction, and research or other creative activity, and service. Furthermore, the individual shall have earned some regional recognition for excellence appropriate to the field of assignment.  The pertinent special criteria associated with the approval of a Special Title Series position shall serve as guidance for evaluators in matters related to appointment, reappointment, promotion, and the granting of tenure.

  1. Evidence of effective and continued growth and improvement in teaching through evaluation and transmission of knowledge form teacher to student. Evidence of effective teaching including knowledge of the subject, enthusiasm, creativity, clarity of presentation, ability to engage students, and continued commitment to improving teaching effectiveness.

Evidence of effective, continued growth and improvement in teaching is demonstrated by but not limited to favorable evaluations by students, faculty colleagues via peer review of the teaching, student or resident recognition, and college and/or university teaching awards.  Effective teaching can be demonstrated by student or resident recognitions (awards/presentation) for faculty mentored projects/assignments; receipt of Department, College, and/or University teaching training awards.

  1. Evidence of effective and continued growth and improvement in research/scholarly or creative activity. Characteristics of effective research/scholarly include innovated and quality research in the area of expertise.

Evidence of effective, continued growth and improvement in research/scholarly or creative activity as demonstrated by originality, depth, rigor and thoroughness.  Innovation and significance of research problems addressed are measures of research quality.  Evidence of consistent annual publication of original research and review articles in reputable, discipline-recognized journals.

Research/scholarship shall be published in established non-peer and/or peer reviewed journals.  Evidence of effective research may also include attainment of College, University and/or local recognition as a scholar and/or receipt of College, University and/or local awards for scholarly contributions.

  1. Evidence of effective and continued growth and improvement in service includes service to the Department, the College and the University as well as service to the profession and/or general public.

Participation in Department and College committees as well as service to the profession and/or general is expected of all faculty.  Evidence of effective professional/public service demonstrated by but not limited to leadership in College, University, local and/or state organizations.

  1. Continued professional growth by attending conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. related to areas of expertise and leadership. Continued advancement in knowledge and skill sets in order to maintain expert status.

Professor

To qualify for appointment or promotion to Professor, a candidate must meet the qualifications of Associate Professor, and demonstrate that, in the opinion of colleagues, the individual is outstanding in instruction, research or other creative activity and service. In addition, the candidate will have earned national and, perhaps, international recognition in research or other creative activity. It is further stressed that this rank is recognition of attainment rather than of length of service.  The pertinent special criteria associated with the approval of a Special Title Series position shall serve as guidance for evaluators in matters related to appointment, reappointment, promotion, and the granting of tenure.

  1. Evidence of excellence in teaching, evaluation and transmission of knowledge from teacher to student. Characteristics of excellence in teaching include design and deliver of superior courses, or specific modules or topics within courses, as viewed by peers and students. Contribution to professional student advising and mentoring activities and leadership in professional course or general professional curriculum development may contribute to excellence.

Evidence of excellences in teaching is demonstrated by design and delivery of superior courses, or specific modules or topic within courses, as viewed by peers and students and may be accomplished in a variety of venues including professional courses, graduate courses, post-graduate/resident teaching or continuing pharmacy education programs. Additionally, excellence may be documented via individual professional student advising and mentoring activities. Leadership in professional courses or general professional curriculum development may also serve to document excellence. Excellence can be demonstrated by student or resident recognitions (awards/presentation) for faculty mentored projects/assignments; receipt of departmental, college, university or national teaching or training awards; requests for use of developed teaching materials, invitations to present teaching methods, and/or published reports of original or innovative teaching methods.

  1. Evidence of excellence in research/scholarly or creative activity. Characteristics of excellence research/scholarly include innovated and quality research in the area of education methodology and technology.

Evidence in excellences in research/scholarly or creative activity is demonstrated by consistent annual publication of original research and review articles in reputable, discipline-recognized journals.  Research/scholarship shall be published in established peered reviewed publications. Authorship position of first or last on publications or research presentations is a measure of excellence. To demonstrate excellence, emphasis is placed on the impact of the collective work in the disciplinary field rather than the number of publications. Evidence of excellence may include success in obtaining funded grant support for a collaborative research program and funding as principal investigator. Evidence of excellence research include attainment of College, University, local, national, and possible international recognition as a scholar. Receipt of College, University, local, national and possible international awards for scholarly contributions.

Collaborate research programs, including engagement and/or interprofessional initiatives, should meet traditional scholarship criteria to document excellence. Specifically, scholarship for engagement activities should mark significant achievements beyond participation in community service activity.

  1. Evidence of excellence in service includes service to the department, the college and the university as well as service to the profession and/or general public.

Evidence of excellence in professional/public service is demonstrated by leadership in local, state and national professional associations, service on commissions, board membership (professional, editorial, and advisory), participation with accreditation teams, scientific review for journals, grants, awards, abstracts, and national panels (e.g. FDA, CDER, USP, NIH Study Sections or equivalent nationally recognized professional or scientific organizations). Evidence of excellence may include receipt of Department, College or University service awards and/or receipt of local, state or national professional association or public service awards.

  1. Continued professional growth by attending conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. related to areas of expertise and leadership. Continued advancement in knowledge and skill sets in order to maintain expert status.

Evidence of excellence in the professional growth may be demonstrated by making positive contributions to meeting the mission and goals of the department, the college and the university through faculty citizenship.

Area of specialization:

Experience with varied IS methods, including pragmatic trials and qualitative methods, designed to achieve the overall objectives of IS applied to the prevention and treatment of ASUD:

  • generate reliable strategies for improving processes and outcomes and to facilitate the widespread adoption of strategies in the prevention and treatment of ASUD
  • produce insights and generalizable knowledge regarding implementation processes, barriers, facilitators, and strategies in the prevention and treatment of ASUD

Essential Duties of the Position:

Primary Job Functions

  • Developing/maintaining an active research program in implementation and dissemination science and methodology in the area of ASUDs
  • Securing extramural funding to support implementation and dissemination research in ASUDs
  • Developing collaborations and building partnerships to integrate implementation science into practice-based and clinical research
  • Advancing the knowledge of implementation and dissemination science both locally and nationally

Secondary Job Functions

  • Participating in the professional and graduate teaching programs of the College of Pharmacy and other colleges as appropriate
  • Providing service to the Colleges and University through committees and other assignments as appropriate
  • Mentoring graduate students and junior faculty as appropriate based on rank

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • PharmD, MD, PhD in a related field
  • A developing or sustained record of scholarly achievement in implementation science, as appropriate based on rank
  • Strong track record of acquiring extramural research funding or potential to acquire extramural funding as appropriate based on rank

  • Commitment to development of and scholarly participation in implementation science research programs and a collaborative orientation toward University, community and state activities that enhance the health of the citizens of Kentucky
